July 9, 2024

Question

Is there an Islamic consensus on whether an unmarried Muslim woman may adopt a child? I know there are strict rulings regarding inheritance, mahram, etc. But is adoption fully prohibited if one is not married? Even if she is of sound mind, financially stable, etc.?

Answer

No, being unmarried does not prohibit adoption. As you alluded to, adoption in Islam is more comparable to fostering. Thus, unless you become the child's mother through breastfeeding, which must occur before the age of two, the child won't be considered a mahram.
